I want to be able to produce an outline around 2D sprites to indicate that a spell is in effect on that unit (it will probably be a glowing animating one, but lets not worry about this for now).

When the vertex colour is red the shader will take the red channel data where alpha = 0 and render it (possible with animations/etc).


My questions:

1. Does anyone know of/has anyone done anything similar?
2. Are there alternative that will work better?
